Assignment: Errors

I have always been very particular about the assignments that all of you handed up. And having mentioned certain key issues numerous times, I still see students cancelling part of a value.

Errors are starting to surface and when such things happen, you are bound to be penalized. One very good example is seen below.

Look at the value above and compare with his final answer.

Practice: Number Sequence (Quadratic Terms)

Dear students of S1-07,

To better understand the quadratic terms of number sequence, please try to attempt the following question.

Form the nth term of the sequence

7, 12, 20, 31, 45, …

DO NOT REFER to the image below until you complete.

The solution for the question is:

Investigation: Volume of Cone & Cylinder

For the curious onlookers of S105,

The volume of a cone fills up one-third of the volume of cylinder. That is to say, you will need three cones to fill up a cylinder.

Fun Facts: Mathematics Wonders

On this very last day of a series of Level Tests and the continuation of Australian Mathematics Competition, I have decided to fascinate you with a little bit more imagination.

In this blog, you will realise a lot of interesting facts about Mathematics. It will not only show you problem-solving skills, but how it can be applied in the real world context. And yes, food is included.

You may visit http://spring-of-mathematics.tumblr.com for more fun facts.

Have a restful long week ahead!

Investigation: Algebra

I have posted a question for you to investigate.

You have a task over the weekend to complete, and that is to WRITE OUT THE FOLLOWING QUESTION and IDENTIFY ERRORS PERFORMED.

I will be collecting this on MONDAY.

Wednesday, 12 February 2014

Assessment: Viva Voce (Question)

Viva Voce Assessment 1

This is the actual alternative assessment task (Term 1 Week 7).
The submission date for the actual Viva Voce is Friday 21 Feb 2359 hours.

The task is compulsory, and you are to submit your work via the platform instructed by your teacher.

Topic: Number systems

Objective of Task:
To demonstrate your understanding of the concepts and calculations through clear articulation and presentation of problem solving.

Instructions (I):
·                     This is an individual task. Complete the viva voce practice on your own.
·                     This is a reinforcement of similar questions based on the topic covered in class.
·                     It will also help you to seek and articulate your understanding of concepts as you attempt to explain your approach and solution to the problem.
·                     You should not take more than 1 hour to complete the entire task.
For this practice, you will need to record your work and post it on the designated platform.

Instructions (II):
·                     Add up the last 5 digits of your NRIC number. This 2 digit number “XX” is what you will convert from a decimal system to a binary system.
·                     DO NOT RECITE OUT YOUR ENTIRE NRIC NUMBER ON THE VIDEO FOR SECUITY REASONS. You only need to state the last 5 digits on video.
·                     Using your birthdate “YY” as another 2 digit number, explain how you will perform the simple arithmetic operation “XX + YY” in binary system.
·                     Research on how to count in binary system using the digits “0” and “1”.
·                     Explain briefly, in your own words, on how a binary system works. You may choose to use any visualization tools to help explain yourself.
·                     Work out and explain the solution clearly. You may choose to write it out, or use various software like Numbers to write your own script.
·                                             Do not simply read out the lines of the working. Instead, inform the audience:
1.    how you identify the key information
2.    why you choose a particular method to solve the problem
3.    explain how the method works

4.            Recording
a.            In this practice, learn to use QuickTime Player to record your viva voce.
b.            Here are some ways that you can present your worked solution:
i.                You may sit in front of the computer and show the working (on papers) as you explain how you solve or problem using the "movie recording" feature in QuickTime Player.
1.            Click HERE to view sample
ii.                You may present your work in KeyNotePages, PowerPoint Presentation, etc and use the "screen recording" feature in QuickTime Player to do the video recording.
1.            Click HERE to view sample
iii.                You may also use explain the problem on a whiteboard and have your classmates to help record using a camera or any other methods that you could think of
c.            Remember to keep the file size small.
d.            For technical consultation, please approach Mr Jonathan Chua, your ICT Teacher.
5.            Submission of work
a.            Post your video clip in YouTube
i.                Under "Private Settings", select "Unlisted"
ii.                Copy and paste the URL in the GoogleForm below
b.            For students who are unable to activate the YouTube account (due to age limit, as you need to activate your Google+ account at the same time), you may seek help from your Parents to upload your work via their YouTube account
